The 6th edition of the Guth Gafa Film Festival will be as breathtaking and challenging as ever, with the very best award-winning international and Irish feature documentaries. We are pleased to give you a little sneak preview on this year’s programme highlights.

Confirmed highlights from the international programme of feature documentaries include Position Among The Stars (Netherlands), Vodka Factory (Sweden), There Once Was an Island (New Zealand), My Avatar and Me (Denmark), Our School (Switzerland/USA), Windfall (USA) and many more.

The Guth Gafa team are proud to present the Republic of Ireland premiere of the Sundance World Cinema and IDFA winner Position Among The Stars by the acclaimed Dutch director/cinematographer Leonard Retel Helmrich. The film is the concluding part of a trilogy on Indonesia, which follows the funny and moving everyday ups and downs of the Sjamsuddin family, which serve Retel Helmrich as an indirect channel for a portrait of modern Indonesia, with all its contrasts between urban and rural, wealth and poverty, and religion and globalization. Retel Helmrich will also be offering a 2-day Cinematography workshop at Guth Gafa..

The winner of the 53rd Dok Leipzig Festival Golden Dove, Vodka Factory by Jerzy Sladkowski (Sweden, 2010) takes place in Russia, in the town of Zhigulyovsk, 620 miles south of Moscow. It follows Tatiana, a 50-year-old bus conductor and her 22-year-old daughter Valentina, who works in the titular vodka factory in town but dreams of moving to Moscow to become a TV star. We will also present the creative documentary-fiction film My Avatar and Me by Bente Milton (Denmark, 2010), a film that might expand your sense of reality. It is the story about a man who enters the virtual world, Second Life to pursue his personal dreams and ambitions. His journey into cyberspace becomes a magic learning experience, which gradually opens the gates to a much larger reality. and MUCH MUCH MORE!!!
